Understanding Illinois Specialty License Plate Tiers
Illinois Standard License Plates
The standard plate option is the most basic license plate option offered by the state of illinois. It does not allow you to customize the message on your plate.
Illinois Personalized License Plates
A personalized plate can include letters and numbers as long as the letters and numbers aren’t mixed. It may include up to 6 letters and any number 1-9 or up to 5 letters and any number 10-99. If you include both letters and numbers, there must be a space between them. Any combination of letters or numbers that could be considered obscene will be rejected.
Illinois Vanity License Plates
Vanity plates can display letters or numbers, but not both. You may include up to 7 letters or up to 3 numbers. Any combination of letters or numbers that could be considered obscene will be rejected.
How Do I Choose an Illinois License Plate?
To get a custom license plate, your vehicle must first be titled and registered in your name. Leased vehicles are not eligible for custom license plates. Your address must also match the address of your current registration card.
To apply for a custom license plate, bring the following to your your local driver services facility:
- Vehicle registration card

Custom License Plate Ideas
Car-Related
When it comes to car-related custom license plates, the possibilities are endless. These plates can showcase anything from your vehicle’s qualities to your favorite car make or model. For instance, a Porsche enthusiast might choose “PORSCHE 1” or a muscle car lover might opt for “MUSTNG 68” to commemorate a classic 1968 Mustang.
For those who take pride in their vehicle’s performance, plates like “FASTEST” or “QUICKGT” can make a bold statement. Other popular options include nods to the car’s color or distinctive features, such as “REDSPYDR” for a red convertible or “BLKTESLA” for a sleek black Tesla.
Personal
Personalized license plates are a great way to express individuality and give your car a unique touch. You might consider including your name, nickname, or initials, or the date of an important event in your life. Some people prefer to highlight their hobbies or interests, using plates like “GOLFER 1” or “BKLOVER” for book enthusiasts.
Others might celebrate significant life events or milestones with plates such as “WED4EVA” or “GRAD 24.” Additionally, incorporating favorite quotes or mottos, like “DRMWNTR” for “Dream, Win, Triumph,” can motivate you every time you get behind the wheel.
Funny Phrases
Adding humor to your license plate is a surefire way to bring a smile to fellow drivers on the road. Funny phrases can range from clever wordplay to light hearted jokes. For example: a plate like “IMLATE” can poke fun at perpetual tardiness. Plates such as “BCKOFF” can offer a humorous take on tailgating, and “BYE2U” can add a bit of sass.
For pet lovers, a plate like “DOGGIE” can bring a smile, while “FMLYVAN” can humorously acknowledge the chaos of family life. These light-hearted plates not only personalize your vehicle but also spread a bit of joy to others on the road.
